Betty Ann's Story

Life Life Bio? Where does one start?... After high school I worked for Glenn W. Turner Enterprises located on Sandlake Road. Within a two year period, I started in the mail room and worked my way up to retail manager of a small in-house store....you may remember the GWT philosophy of "Dare to be Great!" It was definitely an interesting experience...Glenn ran through the office constantly with the little (dwarf) Rice brother twin's and a beauty queen. I see them (the twins) on television now doing commercials. One day I went to lunch and upon my return the police and television cameras halted me at the entrance. They were seizing GWT's records and were only allowing employees back in. At that point I thought it was only a matter of time before they closed his business down so I considered other options. Disney World had recently opened and I had always been a big Sunday night Walt Disney/mouseketeer fan so I went to work for Disney World as a receptionist/clerk typist in the transportation department. I loved all of the amenities...the use of the parks, hotel tennis courts, tennis lessons, new people, parties, and the unexpected..such as looking out of my office window to see a little train with a giraffe and other animals sticking out of the cars. Silly...but fun....at least for about 4 years. About this time my German aunt's family offered me a job. The only hitch would be that I would have to move to Dusseldorf, Germany to take the job....hmm...let me think...I'm 24, single, never been out of the country...You can bet your life I said yes! I purchased an open-ended round trip ticket to Brussels, where I was picked up by my aunt's mother and other family members and driven to Buderich, Germany. My aunt's brother's wife owned a couple of boutiques in this small town outside of Duesseldorf (one of the fashion capitals of the world). I was supposed to work in her stores...however..after a few welcome parties and a few sight-seeing tours they took me to the American Embassy for me to register and...Expand for more
to have some one translate (I had not learned the language yet)that unfortunately I would not be able to work for them because I needed a work permit. I would only be able to get a work permit if the job required the use of the English language, which it didn't. They thought I might be upset and wanted to be sure there were no misunderstandings. I wasn't upset...I was having a great time...I had a few dollars in my pocket (which they had not let me spend), they offered me a place to live until I found work, and I had an open-ended ticket. So my next mission was to learn the language as quickly as possible and get out and find a job. I was dining out with some friends and was offered a temporary (paid cash each day-no work permit) waitress job in a pizza place attached to a discotheque. I had signed up for a two week Berlitz language course and I thought interacting with others would enhance my ability to quickly learn the language and put a few Deutsche Marks in my pocket so I accepted. Within a month or so I found a job as a foreign language correspondent with Thyssen Rheinstal Technik on Konigs Allee in Dusseldorf. By the way...I met my future husband at the discotheque next to the pizza place. Anyway...I'm running out of characters so I better make these stories a little shorter. I lived in Germany for about 7 years....got married..vacationed in Spain and France..had a daughter....moved back to the states.....got divorced. I loved Europe and still travel as much as possible. When I came back to the states I worked for a small firm which provided airport security in Orlando, and the Miami area. I started as the President's secretary and then was trained to work as the comptroller. The owner sold the company and offered me a job as a legal secretary in his other firm, which I accepted. Currently I am employed at a State College as the Vice President of College Administration's Administrative Assistant. Is this a resume or bio? I'm also back in school and working on my bachelor's degree.
